Shared Office Spaces for Startups; Mantra Provides an Option in Bangalore

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

Space crisis. Cash crunch. Acquiring suitable human resource. Chaos. All these situations can be associated to most of the young startups. Aware of these difficulties, Subodh Vichurkar, a startup enthusiast himself, provides a shared office space with Mantra Business Centre in Bangalore. “During my initial startup phase, when I was working from home, I felt a strong need to go out and work from a professional office location.  Nevertheless, there were problems, business centers were too expensive and creating own office space meant spending most of the time on things that are not relevant to idea development.” Says Subodh. Key Features about the Mantra Business Centre: Workstations are available at Rs 5000 a month including facilities like air conditioning, internet, meeting and conference rooms with LCD projectors and a shared cafeteria Paid photo copying and printing Has 50 workstations currently Service not extended to call-centers Conducive environment for technology Startups   Working in a shared office space. What do the experienced folks have to say? I believe start-ups are ruled by roadblocks, small teams, lot more work and undying enthusiasm. Sharing synergies in one office is a good idea as the energies can flow, you will never be short of ideas, and you have users sitting next to you for beta testing of products. And on a lighter side, you can drink their coffee and can always look for an alternate job in the next team! – Kamna Hazrati on her experience of having worked in a shared office This concept hasn’t yet caught up in places like Indore where the startup buzz is yet to catch on but still there are occasional instances wherein you find companies sharing office space mutually. I personally have a doubt regarding efficiency but looking at the motivation within a startup, nothing should deter them. – Subrat Kar, Indore based entrepreneur Being based out of Bangalore, Mantra sees huge demand. “I meet on an average one start-up founder everyday and being an entrepreneur that is an additional incentive you get for running such a service.” says Subodh. “However, we are still at early days for shared office commercial rental business model in India. Though it is the fastet growing business segment in property business worldwide, jury is still out on its effectiveness in India. If we see promising results over next three months, we plan to expand in more areas in Bangalore and beyond Bangalore as well.” adds Subodh on being asked about expansion plans. More about Mantra Business Center on their site and in case you’re fascinated by the idea, here’s something to show how long this concept has been around.

Rocking Robin at Bangalore

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

Robin Sharma , the leadership guru, enthralled 1000 people at Leadership Without Title workshop at Bangalore today hosted by Rang De, the micro entrepreneur support platform. The serpentine queue at the entrance stood witness to the popularity of Robin who is doing this workshop all over the world. As Robin took stage, a few enthusiastic followers greeted him with hoo and loud applause. Starting with a Sanskirt poem his father taught him about a person at deathbed who regretted about what he did not do, Robin stressed the need to focus on few essential goals for success in life. Stating we live in the age of draining distractions, he said good leaders are known for their unwavering focus on essentials. He stressed on the importance of energy and passion essential to keep the workforce motivated in times of economic uncertainty that is likely to continue at least for two decades to follow. “Good leaders provoke people to things they thought they never could do,” pointed out Robin, interspersing his talk with a few exercises such as talking to strangers and massaging people on either side and getting massaged in the process. It was fun. Job is the vehicle through which you express your potential, gifts and talent. Pointing out that money should take minimum prominence in human endeavors; Robin said making an impact is what matters. Joey Dunlop and Oseala McCarthy are remembered for what they did to elevate other human beings and Robin took the audience through their life journey. “Little acts of excellence daily lead to stunning results,” stressed Robin through these people’s acts. You shouldn’t become against your own values in pursuit of success. He later gave nine productivity tips. In the second part of his speech, Robin dwelt upon “The New Rules Of Remarkable Leadership”. In this age, anyone can show leadership. Connect and create should be the basis of leadership rather than command and control. Leaders should focus on influencing, impacting and inspiring people. Seven Devotions of Leaders Without Title 1. Be so good at what you do that people can’t take their eyes off. Become indispensable 2. Stop making excuses and deliver results with speed 3. Conquer the addiction to distraction 4. Leave people better than you find them and inspire unimaginable work. 5. Avoid the seduction of success via daily chutzpah. 6. See inside first. This means you should do things to elevate yourself. 7. Lead you to lead others. The stunning energy and the momentum that Robin generated through his talk are sure to send his leadership message across tellingly. The couple of videos that Robin showed had fun and life’s lessons told powerfully than words could tell. The key to becoming a good leader in essence is becoming a good, better, energized, passionate human being constantly elevating self and using your power of inside to inspire, influence and impact other people. You don’t need any title to do that. – Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy , chief evangelist energized by Robin Sharma’s three-hour inspiring session

How to Manage Gender Discrimination in the Workplace

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg recently stated at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland: “We reward men for being leaders, for being assertive, for taking risks, for being competitive; we teach women as young as four to lay back, be communal. We need our girls to be ambitious to achieve in the workforce.” Double-standards are ubiquitous in the workplace. Ambitious men are assertive. The same quality in women is often seen as aggressive and competitive. In a society where equality is increasing in value, how do you avoid this type of gender discrimination in the workplace? Men have, traditionally, been seen as the bread winners, while women are the caregivers. A man can work tirelessly through long hours and weekends – while a woman needs to go home and tend to her family. These days, the trend is shifting. More women are executives than ever, while still raising children and tending to domestic duties. Men are changing roles as well, providing a more active and even leading role in the household. If a spouse supports your ambition, your job environment certainly should. As stated in a Forbes’ article published in October 2011, there are more than 27 million small businesses in the United States, and over 7.7 million of these businesses are owned by women. Though these statistics vary by source, this still equates to an overwhelming majority of male small business owners. While perhaps an interesting fact, here’s the difficulty with it: by focusing on the numbers, it’s still valuing gender over qualifications. Does it matter how many men versus women are in the workplace, are CEOs, are on boards, or own businesses? The answer, in my mind, is no. What matters, or should matter, is who is capable of holding these positions. What is important is that both genders are treated fairly, regardless of sex, or for that matter: race, age, culture, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic that causes prejudgment. Favoring one group over another only serves to call out the already existing gap. How do we solve for this? The answer is simple – too unassuming for many to recognize: treat every person with equality. Sure, it’s easier said than done, but isn’t that true with everything worthwhile? Instead of being hypersensitive to details that don’t matter, look at performance, values, skillset, and experience. Managing gender discrimination in the workplace is about eradicating discrimination. Imagine that all you have is a resume with no name or individual characteristics. Then imagine that you can get to know that same person with no identifying information. This is impossible in actuality of course, but the key to mastering impartiality is two-fold. Do not hold back rewards, roles, responsibilities or recognition based on prejudice, and do not provide these things for the same reason. Social Media Opportunities Beckon Entrepreneurs as Two-Third of Organizations Will Use It By 2015

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

A recent report by Gartner Inc. says 75 percent of organizations with BCM (Business Continuity Management) programs will have public social media services in their crisis communications strategies by 2015. “Enterprises simply cannot afford to ignore social media as a crisis communications tool,” said Andrew Walls , Research Vice President at Gartner. “In many cases, social media may represent the only available means of locating and contacting personnel; providing stakeholders with the information and assistance they need; informing citizens, customers and partners of product/service availability; and taking other business-critical actions following a disruptive event.” However, Andrew said that effective use of a new communications channel requires forward planning and practice. Attempting to leverage social media for the first time during a crisis can cause more harm than good. Instead, he said that organizations must develop comprehensive social media strategies and tactics for crisis/incident management and integrate social media with the enterprise’s established BCM processes. The use of social media for user input and knowledge sharing can create a conflict for organizations when the sites are being used during a crisis by the workforce and others that are involved or watching the event unfold. Speaking about challenges that new communication channels like social media can present, Roberta Witty , Research VP at Gartner said, “As the workforce develops personal, digital friendships that might take precedence over the official spokesperson of the organization, a conflict over who is the authority during an event can emerge, leading to unanticipated and negative results if official procedures are not followed.” Therefore, putting forth a social media management strategy as part of a BCM program is essential to ensure that the organization’s crisis communications effectiveness is protected, and that response and recovery plans and procedures are followed. Roberta believes that organizations developing social media strategies and tactics for crisis management must factor in that social media is very different, technically and culturally, from the tightly controlled technologies and means of communication that enterprises are accustomed to using and supporting (such as corporate email systems). She further said that it is necessary to establish effective authorization processes, content guidelines and monitoring and message retention capabilities. She summed it up perfectly by saying that the bottom line is that no enterprise’s BCM efforts can afford to ignore the opportunities and risks presented by social media.

Making Learning a Fun, Engaging and Social Experience; The DreamNotion Way

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

We all lead a stressful life and over a period of time our performance levels get affected. Bangalore based startup DreamNotion seeks to provide products that transform one’s everyday environment into a more prolific atmosphere providing psychological incentives to drive performances. Backed by extensive research in related domains, primarily gaming design, psychology and social media, the company endeavors to provide products and solutions that will alter the mundane milieu into a productive and creative setting with enhanced individual productivity. DreamNotion was started by Karan Sachdev and Sandeep Kelvadi. They quit their high paying IT jobs to pursue their dreams. The beginning The idea of Dreamnotion was formed back in August 2010. The idea was to provide a solution that would aid in improving the engagement levels in schools and thereby positively impacting the quality of learning. They were inspired by the love for games among people of all ages. This gave them the idea to come up with a product that drew inputs from the psychology behind goal oriented games and aided learning and development. Choosing the name was through a systematic and evolutionary process. “We wrote down all the areas of interest which were common between us and then just played around with words till we got DreamNotion Innovations,” said Karan. The Founders Both Karan and Sandeep come from a computer science engineering background. They studied together at P.E.S.I.T, Bangalore. Sandeep went on to complete his MS (Information Systems) from New Jersey Institution of Technology. Post that, he joined a promising healthcare startup that dealt with cognitive assessments. In his spare time he travels a lot and is a freelance photographer as well. Karan joined a startup that provides virtualization technologies to Fortune 500 companies, right after graduating from P.E.S.I.T. He shares a love for travelling with Sandeep. Xplore: The social learning platform With Xplore, DreamNotion entered the education sector. It is a social learning platform and plans to make learning a fun, engaging and social experience. XPlore provides a network to promote learning activities and facilitates delivery of content and measures the progress made. XPlore puts the focus on the students and treats them as unique individuals rather than mere numbers in a report. It acts as a bridge between the teacher and the student and provides students with the necessary motivation required to take part in and finish a project/assignment/homework given to them. “ With XPlore one can motivate and reward different types of students in different ways. So every student has his/her own path to success,” said Karan. DreamNotion used standard Web technologies like Javascript, AJAX, HTML5 and Ruby on Rails to develop XPlore as they are widely popular technologies and have great support. Other offerings DreamNotion’s main aim is to help schools understand technology better, simplify it and help them adopt it. There are plenty of learning tools available today; a lot of them free, that schools can use to improve their learning environment. “DreamNotion provides technology consulting to help schools choose the right tool, conduct workshops and training,” informed Karan. “Using our experience in building XPlore, we will help businesses integrate gamification concepts into their websites and products. Individuals or companies looking to take advantage of social media can look to us for helping them set up a social media presence and integrating their website and apps with social media networks,” he added. Early Challenges “Lack of resources forced us to think of different approaches to solving problems. Splitting roles and responsibilities helped us tackle issues better,” said Karan. Time management and multitasking were some of the other challenges the duo faced initially. “Lack of prior experience in different areas resulted in us spending many hours reading and researching on topics like education, pedagogy, psychology, game design and business related issues,” added Karan. Views on EduStars Speaking about the EduStars campaign, Karan said, “Edustars is a great platform for early stage education startups as it helps in connecting startups to VCs and industry experts. It also serves as a platform for entrepreneurs like us to share our experiences and learn from each other and gives us exposure to early stage startups which helps us gain traction.” DreamNotion moving forward The belief that DreamNotion can solve some of the problems that the educational system in India is facing, through their innovative products, keeps the duo motivated. Five years from now the education sector will see more participation from the private sector, bringing in different and newer approaches to learning. Technology will also play a key role. Dreamnotion plans to diversify its offerings within the education sector from the current K-12 focus to include higher education, vocational training and sports academies. “Learning opportunities at every corner, meeting new and interesting people and the creative freedom in solving challenges that come your way,” answered Karan, when asked about what they enjoy about being entrepreneurs. YourStory.in believes that startups like DreamNotion can bring real change to the educational setup in India. We will be keenly following their progress. Watch out this space for more updates about DreamNotion. NLPCaptcha: An Advertising Platform that promises to ‘Captcha’ your attention!

by Paul Joseph February 29, 2012 Featured

Most online publishers use Captcha as a security tool. Google estimates say that over 200 million Captchas are filled every day. India has 100 million internet users in India which is projected to reach 336 million by 2016 according to report published by Edelweiss Securities Ltd. So, more than 5% of global internet users will be Indians. Noida based startup, Simpli5d Technologies  understands the potential these numbers present and introduced a novel take on Captchas. They launched NLPCaptcha , which is a Captcha based advertising platform. The NLPCaptcha technology is patent pending with the Government of India. This is a win-win offering for both online publishers and advertisers. As a publisher, it not only provides better security to your website but also helps you monetize it. It converts your dead space reserved for security into the most premium inventory which the advertisers will love to buy and that too at zero upfront cost. The entire revenues add directly to the bottom line. As an advertiser, it solves a fundamental problem – how to get 100% focused attention of the user and a high recall for the brand message. NLPCaptcha ensures that the user does not only see your ad but also engages with it. The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania recently did a research on Captcha advertisement and found that on an average Captcha advertisements increased brand recall by 111% and message recall by a factor of 12x compared with the exact same creative displayed as traditional static advertisements. NLPCaptcha was started by Sidharth Oswal , Amit Mittal and Sahil Gupta . Amit is a computer engineer and has worked at TCS. Later he did his MBA from IIM Lucknow. He was the marketing head at Dainik Bhaskar Group before he started working on NLP Captcha. Sidharth is also a computer engineer and holds a MBA degree in Finance and Marketing from Fore School of Management. He is a seasoned banker and has over 5 years of experience in sales. The third founder, Sahil Gupta, graduated in computer engineering from Kurukshetra University and has over 10 years of experience in development and management of web/mobile based products. Unlike a regular Captcha, where the user just fills in a particular word or phrase, NLPCaptcha asks them to fill either the brand’s tagline or anything else connected to the brand being advertised. The advertiser gets complete attention of the customer and brand recall is also high. Speaking about the advantages that NLPCaptcha presents an advertiser, Amit Mittal, co-founder, said, “ The click through rate is a high 50%. By a 50% click through rate, I mean, out of every 100 people who fill a captcha 50 click on the advertisement.” “We only charge for the cost per recall,” added Amit. NLPCaptcha is a bootstrapped startup and their current focus is on exploring new verticals and using Captcha to create new services. Initially, their focus was on building a competent tech team. “ We were lucky in terms of the core team as all of us have a strong background in tech and media/advertising,” informed Amit. Speaking about the early challenges NLPCaptcha faced, Amit said, “NLPCaptcha on the face of it looks very simple but I am sure you would understand that a significant effort goes into making the product look so simple. The growth in our case is highly inorganic and we could not enter the market with a beta version as the publishers you tie-up with, will have a dependency on NLPCaptcha.” Amit also added that they could not afford a single minute of downtime and their efforts paid off as the product is highly stable, scalable and secure. The Edelweiss report also mentions that the online advertising space will experience more than 25% CAGR through 2016. This surely is music to NLPCaptcha’s ears. NLPCaptcha has already got great traction. They are working with an impressive list of publishers, including Dainik Jagran group sites, Sify.com, Deccan Chronicle Group, Indian Express group sites and India Today group sites. They have also done ad campaigns for Lenskart.com, Zovi, etc. “We are also evaluating campaigns with Aircel, Lufthansa and other players,” informed Sidharth. Finally, Amit summed it up when he said, “Last comes the basic chicken and egg situation – Publishers want advertisers and advertisers want good publishers/ reach. This is one of the most testing phases and luckily we have crossed that stage now but still a lot more to do.” Find out more about NLPCaptcha .

Making Your Small Business Seem Bigger

by Paul Joseph February 28, 2012 Featured

Nobody can deny that owning your own small business is a challenging and rewarding experience. Sometimes though, you can feel like a tiny grain of sand on a large beach, especially when you study the habits of your larger big-business rivals. Most small business owners have at one time or another wished they could own the company that turns heads and creates a major stir. It can be quite common for a small business to have an inferiority complex, and this usually stems from how you perceive yourself in the marketplace. You may think you are not big enough to compete, you do not have the experience of the larger companies, or you don’t have their resources. The irony is that it can be this false sense of inferiority that can be holding you back from your true business potential. It’s time to turn this around and stop keeping your business in the shadows simply because of how you may perceive it. Firstly, a smart way to turn around a perceived lack of size is to simply pretend your business is bigger. This isn’t necessarily a lie. When a customer first comes into contact with your business, they usually assume it consists of more than just you. Why change that assumption? If you ever do need to show your business as larger, you can always bring in short term staff that can help you with that big business perception. But who says being small is a bad thing? You could take another angle and use your size as an asset. Offer your customers a more personable experience when they deal with your business. Many customers prefer a more one-on-one process where they don’t feel like they are just another cash-cow for a faceless corporation. You can use your size to your advantage by making your business more accessible. The same goes for creating a perception of experience. If you are a new business, you may be worried that the customer base won’t have trust in you because of your short time on the market. Every new business has been born from something in the past. Utilize any relevant experience you and your staff have had before joining your business. You’d be surprised how this culmination of shared experiences within your small organization can make your business look more seasoned than you perceive it to be. In terms of resources, it comes down to being able to convince your customer base that you are capable of anything. If a customer needs a large quantity of a product in a scale you have never produced before, you must put them at ease with confidence and self-assuredness that you can get it done. This may be challenging if you doubt your ability to reach that goal, but you started this business to eventually grow, so when an opportunity to stretch yourself and your team arrives, it is usually worth taking it. So much of business is about perception, and the sooner you begin seeing your business in the best light, the sooner you will be able to compete with the big boys. Do you agree? Is it better to present your business as it is, or try to appear bigger? Share your thoughts in the comments section and on our Facebook page ! Adam Toren is an Award Winning Author, Serial Entrepreneur and Investor. He Co-Founded YoungEntrepreneur.com along with his brother Matthew. Adam is co-author of the newly released book: Small Business, Big Vision: “Lessons on How to Dominate Your Market from Self-Made Entrepreneurs Who Did it Right” and also co-author of Kidpreneurs .
