How To Be Creative At Work Part 3: Which Personality Types Have The Biggest Influence In Business?

by Paul Joseph April 26, 2011 Featured

We’re up to the last of our three part article on “ How To Be Creative At Work “, looking at the Artist/Creator and Storyteller , these last two play personalities are my highest scoring ones…but they can shuffle around, none are fixed Obviously, when we’re seeing creativity touted as the  most sought after characteristic in business leaders today, then the Artist/Creator is going to be considered useful in our work. This is a fairly recent phenomenon though, usually creatives have been considered weird, flaky, eccentric or just unreliable. The artist play personality may find they get into their zone through any number of activities. It can be a regular creative activity like painting, drawing or design, or it could be more unusual, like engineering or tinkering with things. Pulling machines apart and putting them back together can be a highly creative activity, or it could be gardening or cooking. There are endless things that can be considered artistic and creative pursuits. Making Something From Nothing The big hint is, an Artist/Creator makes something . They create something new that didn’t exist prior to them making it, whether it’s from existing objects like mechanical parts or raw materials, like vegetables or block of clay. It’s this ability of the Artist/Creator play personality that makes them so sought after in business. As Dr. Brown says, Artist/Creators just love to make something, whether it’s beautiful, functional, quirky or just to make something work. This is a  highly lucrative ability to have in business, as customers always want at least one, or all of those elements in the products and services they spend money on. Artist/Creators access the unknown, or the sub conscious/super conscious mind when they’re playing around and being creative. They can bring new insights, new things, novel things into the realm of our sensory perception. The Artist/Creator accesses insights and information that has previously not been within reach of the conscious mind, perhaps only in our unconscious or super conscious. This stuff gets me freakishly excited! (BTW, one of our readers, Terry, has been waiting patiently for me to write more about this aspect of creativity. I haven’t forgotten Terry, it’s going to be in the article that follows this one .) How Creative Are You? Now, just a note on this, all play personalities/people can, and do access their unconscious or super conscious mind, it’s not a gift specifically for Artist/Creators. But usually it’s something this play personality does as a matter of course in their preferred way to play, because a big part of the creative process is making something exist that we have previously not been able to perceive with sensory perception. Creatives can be aware of their ability to drop into the unknown and bring information back, others just do it. All the play personalities might actually be bringing insights and information in from the unconscious or super conscious mind just as much, but they may not be so aware of it, or of the process in which they do this, because they don’t consider the creative element involved in what they’re doing as activities. How It Works At Work It’s been discussed in detail that the biggest hindrance to creativity is lack of autonomy or freedom. This is extremely apparent when it comes to the Artist/Creator play personality being able to make use of their abilities at work. A big part of the Artist/Creator process is playing around with ideas and concepts, putting things together and pulling them apart, trying out a multitude of ways of doing things in order to come up with a winning strategy or solution to their problem . This goes for everything, whether it’s cooking, painting, sculpting or marketing, team management and business building. Because this play personality is engaged in creating a new way, a new solution, a new form, there is a lot of trial and error, a lot of practise, testing and failing involved in their creative process. In order for you to be able to make use of this play personality at work, you need to be able to work on projects that give you a lot of freedom and autonomy. Some work roles allow for this very effectively, designers and engineers are often given a reasonable degree of freedom to create within set guidelines. And certain guidelines are not only necessary, but extremely helpful, like having a time frame to work to. Those types of guidelines are very beneficial for the creative process. Savvy employers know that they’ll get the best results if they allow the creative members of their team to work things out in their own way. If this is not something that is a normal part of the Artist/Creator work role, then we need to give ourselves creative projects outside of work that will give us this. A Trick For Unlocking Creativity One of the things I’ve found that helps people a lot in their creative process is being able to physically manipulate different elements of the project they’re working on. Being able to have both a visual and kinesthetic experience of picking up parts of the work and moving them around can really help clear creative blocks and get things flowing. It also brings another perspective, which we have discussed previously for enhancing creativity. I had a client recently who was very blocked in her own writing process. I suggested she gets together a bunch of images or symbols to represent each chapter of her book, or even just the main points in her message, then lay them out in front of her any format that seemed “right”. She looked at the images and symbols, and moved them around, added more if any new insights surfaced and noticed the order in which she was placing them. As she moved the physical components of her book around in front of her, it began to take shape and unlock her creativity for the writing process. I love gardening, my garden is sadly neglected right now as I am so busy with a million other things that require my attention. I don’t actually ever want gardening to be the way I earn money, I prefer to write, speak and draw instead. But the creative act of gardening puts me in a play state where I’m in a zone that allows me to access information and insights that I can bring back to the work I do, which generates money for me. So if your work does not allow you to get into the Artist/Creator play state, you need to find ways to incorporate it in life outside of work, doing whatever it is you love to do as an Artist/Creator, like playing in the garden, cooking, dabbling with paints or tinkering with software programs or car parts. In doing so, you can get into your creative zone, and return to work refreshed with new insights and ideas. The Storyteller – A Massively Powerful Tool For Marketing And Influence Finally! We’re on to our last play personality! The Storyteller, this one is one of the most powerful play personalities in our lives . The gift of storytelling goes back to the beginning of human civilization, we are literally wired to learn, retain and share information through stories . Stories help us see patterns and understand our lives, they seem to be a necessity for comprehension of the world around us. I hear a lot of speakers, I hear and read a lot of information, but I generally remember the stories whilst other information gets filed somewhere in my mind and I often never find it again. Storytelling is the single most powerful and effective way to convey information and ideas to other humans . It’s the single most powerful way to influence other people. Please read those last two sentences again, I really want this to sink in. If we have products and services we want to share with the world, then making use of our storyteller play personality is going to be one of the most powerful ways to get information to our customers about who we are and what we do because we love listening to stories and we naturally retain the information better in stories. Our storyteller play personality has the most influence over what information our customers retain and what conclusions they come to about us and our products or services. There is a whole article in this, if not a whole book, but I’ve got a few paragraphs to work with here, so let’s summarize. How It Works At Work The Storyteller play personality can be at ease in many work environments, because they spend their time playing in their imagination . They are simply individuals who make up stories in their minds to explain things they’re experiencing or entertain themselves. Storytellers can be writers, speakers, actors, film directors, business leaders or politicians, but anyone in any work role can embody this play personality. In order to integrate this aspect of your play personality into your work, you simply turn your experience into a story in your imagination. What’s particularly cool about this play personality, because we’re using our imagination, we can narrate our stories to have any outcome we like, even if the reality is looking different. When you stop to think about it, we have stories running rampant in our minds all day long anyway. Did anyone see the film, “Bridget Jones’ Diary”? (Total chick flick – I know! But I had to watch it?) The point is, like the character, Bridget Jones, we’re all making little remarks and telling ourselves little stories in our minds about what we’re experiencing or remembering from our past the whole time. So we’re all storytellers and we’re all accessing this aspect of our play personality every day. We can use this in a far more beneficial way by imagining stories about our work and our lives that inspire and uplift us rather than take us off on a negative tangent, which is, unfortunately, what our minds will often do when left to tell stories without our conscious attention . A Trick For Unlocking Your Storytelling Genius Storytelling using our imagination can be a form of mental priming or visualization, something that elite athletes and peak performers use all the time . Stories have a beginning, middle and end. We can use this in our work to mentally prime and visualize the beginning, middle and end of whatever project we work on , and see what insights or information we can gather about our project as we create an imagined story about it. We can mentally rehearse things in our work by creating stories about them . The characters in the story can be people or they can be the different elements of the project we’re working on, or both, put together to make up a story. Using our imagination, we make up stories about whatever we’re working on, and then mentally manipulate the different elements and characters of the story to create our desired outcome. Look at ways in which you can translate the story into your real working environment or project. There is a massive amount of information available on the power of storytelling in business, and I will write another article just on this. In essence, it’s vastly powerful because of the way stories are spread with ease through communities and have so much influence on our memory and perception of people and things . So if we are masterful at creating and sharing a story about who we are in business and what we offer the world, this can be the most influential sales and marketing tool there is. A Last Word On Storytelling – A Word Of Warning! An example of how this works is bad press, think about how fast and effectively a negative image about a person or business can spread through their community, this is the power of story. A story can spread like wild fire by word of mouth and stick like glue in the minds of existing or potential customers. If it’s particularly damaging, it can cripple your business , if it’s a good story, it can elevate your business to a new level . But just remember, we’re wired to remember negative or painful things even more so than positive, because we want to protect ourselves against pain, so a very negative story can have more impact than a positive one. Make sure you know what the story is you create and generate about your own business, and make it congruent about who you are and what you do, and be aware that if you are not in control of this process, then others can make up the story for you (a bit like branding) and spread that instead. This is fine if the stories being generated about you and your work are great, but obviously creating them ourselves is preferable. Just before I sign off, there’s a cool site which has a free story test . It’s tests your ability to know the difference between a story and just recounting information. I did the survey and scored 5 out of 10! That’s pretty bad! But some of the stories were pretty boring so I don’t think I rated them I can improve now anyway, so all is not lost. Thanks for reading, please add any comments you have at the end, and remember you can also find out how you rate for the Artist/Creator and Storyteller play personalities if you do the Creative Character survey on my site. Have fun and good luck playing with the  tests and surveys. Cheers, Neroli. P.S. I mentioned I would post some pics and videos from my week at the Gallery of Modern Art last week. Finally got to taking some on my last day there today! Here’s one from the Infinity Room There’s some video of it as well plus a few other amazing art works, but I wasn’t allowed to take any in the room with all the finches and it was my favorite Get your bonus copy of my book “How To Start An Internet Business & Make Your First $1,000 Online” Download Here

Indian Images

by Paul Joseph October 15, 2010 Featured

Take a notepad. Note down top 10 Indian corporate websites and check out their home page. In case the websites had pictures of people, were the pictures those of Indians? I am sure, it is not Indians in majority of the cases. And the companies may also get away telling that they are MNCs and cannot have pictures of people only from India. Again note down 10 small to medium companies, or companies with operations only in India. The result will be more glaring. Most of the small companies will be using pictures of foreigners. Why do companies in India not use photos of Indians on the websites? Are Indians Ugly and not fit being shown on the websites? But, when we can have Indians in movies, commercials…….can’t we have Indians on websites? Actually, if you search for high resolution images of Indians that can be bought, you will find that there are hardly there are any companies that have these images. In case they have images, it is in most of the cases not affordable. This is a great opportunity for all your entrepreneurs, to start a website that sells Indian images. There is a huge potential. Action, Camera, Shoot……sell

Where do you store your valuables

by Paul Joseph October 29, 2009 Featured

With middle class becoming more and more affluent, they are finding it difficult to store the valuables. Traditionally Indians have been storing the valuables in Bank Lockers. But, now a days it is very difficult to find a Bank Locker. In case you do find a Bank Locker, it is the size of Pigeon Hole and Banks charge a minimum of Rs. 2500 per Year and they also demand a huge Fixed Deposit along with it. If you are an Entrepreneur, you can open a chain of Safety Lockers through out India and the charges for each pigeon hole sized locker will fetch a cool Rs. 2000 per annum. Just walk into a bank with Bank Locker and estimate the money being made in a small area. It is mind boggling. Go ahead and start a safety locker business now. This idea (venture) cannot fail.

Web 2.0 DeAddiction Centre

by Paul Joseph August 24, 2009 Featured

What is Web 2.0? A term describing the supposed second generation of web applications that encompass ‘community’ sites. Examples include wikis, social networking sites, blogs etc Is Web 2.0 successful? If I go by the definition of Web 2.0, I think Web 2.0 gets perfect 10 for achieving the intended purpose. There is huge amount of collaboration, networking, blogging….happening all around But, it has also come with a huge cost. Probably 95% of the people use it for intended reasons. But around 5% of the people are turning into addicts. Following are some of my reasons for the same: Those addicted do not bother saying “Good Morning” to people near them. But, start the day saying “Good Morning” in Micro Blog When I start the day, I see some people active for the past few hours. Even when I am about to hit the bed, I see these same folks still on the Micro Blog. They post information on all topics, answer every other question, post comments from the road/home/office. What is their goal in life? Become a Handyman? I see few folks saying “Going to the loo”, “I hurt my….”, “Take a shave”, “Take a bath”. If a prospective employer checks the background, will he offer such people a job? Do these posts exhibit maturity or expertise? There are some self-proclaimed executives all the time on MicroBlog when they should be running the business. I can understand the Marketing and Sales team trying to get leads/sales. But, not the ones who should be running the business. My advice to users will be to identify the important and urgent things first. If you have a job and there are important/urgent things to do, better take care of them first. If you have family or friends, they are more important than 10000 friends on the Web 2.0. If your plan is to start a company, target all your energy in identifying your audience and post your ideas to attract the prospective stakeholders. Add value to what others say. Forwarding others message continuously doesn’t add value. If you are a student, better concentrate on your studies first. Web Design and Search Engine Optimization will not be lucrative for majority of them. I can keep going on and on. But, I hope atleast I change one addict with this post. For all others, I hope an entrepreneur starts a Web 2.0 DeAddiction centre. Pretty soon there are going to be lot of people needing this service. I will not be surprised if one day a person micro blogs asking for help, instead of asking the person next to him/her. I will also not be surprised, if someone blogs his experience of an accident/heart attack instead of trying to get to a hospital. If you have noticed people turning addicted to Web 2.0, please post your comments and forward this link to them. Rice-Puller Trader

by Paul Joseph July 17, 2009 Featured

I am not sure how many of you have heard about the Rice-Puller story. Search google and you will find stories of Copper vessels with special powers being sold for hundreds of crores of rupees. Read http://bit.ly/OoFEy and http://bit.ly/BvSlk for people making hay while rice-puller shines. Looks like Rice-Puller is a cock and bull story by which many are being taken for a ride. If you are an entrepreneur you can probably do something legal and make lot of money. You do not have to steal the copper vessels. With per-capita income of many people rising in India, they have started disposing their old furniture, Tanjore Paintings, old vessels…. They will instead like to display a pirated copy of Mona Lisa, Ready-made furniture from Malaysia and the Porcelain ware from China. On the other end, their are lot of people who are wealthy and are looking for old Copper Vessels, Rosewood furniture, Tanjore paintings…These people spend a fortune on these items. One man’s trash seem to be another man’s antique. You can be the entrepreneur who buys the trash, clean it, display them in a posh shop and sell it to filthy rich as antique. There are few guys in Bangalore who are already doing that,. You can join the gang.

Why does India perform poorly in Olympic Games?

by Paul Joseph June 8, 2009 Featured

India has been performing consistently in Oympic Games – Consistently poor. Other than some individual medals due to capability of the individual more than the state/country, India’s performance has been pathetic. The reasons are not hard to find. One of the major problem is good sports infrastructure. How many of you have access to a sports ground? How many of those sports ground are maintained properly? Is the sports ground big enough for all the people who come to play? Other than few lucky people, many will surely agree there is no safe play ground nearby. But, there is a big need from parents for their children to play in a friendly environment. To fulfill this demand, you can open an indoor sports arena. It is like a big Warehouse that is split into multiple areas using nets. Each of this area can be used for a sport like Cricket, Football…. There is already one entrepreneur who has made a move. See http://www.xlr8.me/. But, I am sure there is place for many such people.

Mr. Bulb is terminally ill….LED is the heir apparent

by Paul Joseph March 9, 2009 Featured

The Bulb which was invented more than 100 years heat a filament to produce light. But, 90% of the heat is wasted as heat. Heat causes climate change and CFLs looked like good replacement, since CFLs do not generate. But, CFLs contain mercury within them which is dangerous to living beings especially children. The safest replacement for bulbs and CFLs are LEDs. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED_lamp for more info. In India, there are 100 Crore people. Assuming every person will buy a bulb next year, the requirement is for 100 crore bulbs. If LED lights can be manufactured at competitive price, there is a big market to capture. The companies that already manufacture will try to defer moving into LED market since they will lose their current assets. It is time for entrepreneurs to go and capture the wide market. Already some small entrepreneurs have made the move. See http://tinyurl.com/bum6ja , http://www.ledindia.com/main.html . If capital cost is high, start by importing from China.

Wanna Dine like Genghis Khan?

by Paul Joseph May 24, 2008 Featured

In India, there is a new dining experience created every day. And all these restaurants are having capacity crowd. Be it restaurant with Aquariums, designed like Train, Airplane, Jungle,…..But, the food is ready made with no provision to make it to our preference, other than adding salt/pepper or making special request. How about a restaurant where you can pick and chose the ingredients, but you do not have to cook? That is exactly the way Mongolian BBQ works. In Mongolian BBQ, you grab a bowl, select your meat and/or vegetables, add the spices, proceed to the grill. You inform the Chef at the Grill the sauce(s) to use and whether you will like Rice or Noodles. The Chef then Stir Fries your ingredients and serves it hot. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolian_barbecue for more information I am not sure whether Genghis Khan tried this, but I am sure Indians will love it

Help India from Chinese attack and make money

by Paul Joseph May 6, 2008 Featured

Please read the article in Times of India on 5th May titled “China mounts cyber attacks on Indian sites”. It is available online at http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/China_mounts_cyber_attacks_on_Indian_sites/articleshow/3010288.cms From this article you will understand how there is cyber warfare threat from China. If India is involved in a war anytime in future, there will be a major attack on the cyber front. And for all you know, it will not be conventional or nuclear war that will decide the result of war, it might be the cyber war. Even though India is IT giant, when it comes to Cyber threat and Security, India doesn’t have companies with expertise in this area. At the same time, there are thousands of websites mushrooming in the country with many of them containing information like our Credit Card details that can be misused. All these websites are vulnerable to Cyber War. This is one threat that you can exploit to your advantage. Read the article on Penetration Testing at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penetration_testing and many more articles available on the internet. You can start a company with specialisation on Penetration Testing, hire the mavericks from college, learn the art of testing from the internet articles and hurray you are in business. I can assure you, this is one specialized testing that is not prevalent in India and you can become the leader. The Penetration Testing is also one of the expensive tests where you can make a fortune.
