What Is It That You’re ALWAYS Selling?

by Paul Joseph May 6, 2011 Featured

Commenting on my earlier post about “ Time Management Secrets Every Entrepreneur Should Know ,” Dennis said: “Nice presell, Dr.Mani.” I laughingly replied that there was “nothing for sale”. But I lied! Here’s why. Let me ask you a question. What one thing is it that you are ALWAYS selling, no matter what you say or do? Regardless of which business you are in? Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing? Think about it for a moment, answer the question to yourself…and then keep reading. The first time I consciously thought about it was around three years back (it happened in the shower, where some powerful insights pop up regularly, and random thoughts snap together into a startling and clear picture! You?) It was almost revelational! You see, the line of thought started from a forum discussion where people were talking about the now famous Internet marketing ‘ 30 Day Challenge ‘ by Ed Dale . One person stated that Ed wasn’t selling anything…but I knew better. Because I ‘bought’ it. Even ‘sold’ it to others. But… WHAT was it? Before answering it, let me ask you another question. If you could afford to, would you buy me? Yes, ME. Would you buy me? Now, no matter what your answer was, think about this. What if YOU were a product or service? Who would buy you? Why? Marketing is about filling a need, identifying what an audience wants, solving a problem for them. And selling is about making them want it – because unless they want it, they sure ain’t going to buy it! People do business with people. They prefer to work with people they know, like and respect. And because business is always about people, the one thing you are always selling is the PERSON behind the business.  The ‘product’ or ‘service’ called…YOU. If you’re a ‘product’, you should fill a need. If you’re selling the ‘product’, you should learn about positioning it as something your audience wants. That’s exactly what marketing yourself is about – and every single one of us is doing that (successfully, or not) every day, in every way, all the time… knowingly or otherwise! It’s what Ed Dale is ‘selling’ (and doing it masterfully) in his FREE ‘ 30 Day Challenge’ . He’s selling you on ‘Ed Dale’ – the man, the expert, the brand. And every year, thousands are buying…just like I did, just like even you did, maybe. Through this weekly column on Yaro Starak’s blog, that’s what I am doing too. I’m selling you, my reader, on the brand called “ Dr. Mani” . So, you think it’s egoistic to consider an individual a ‘brand’? Here’s an eye-opener for you. It’s this article by Tom Peters I read way back in 1997 that shifted a paradigm in my business thinking, and got me working on a strategy to brand myself. “ The Brand Called You ” is a landmark article every entrepreneur must read, especially in today’s exciting, socially networked, globally accessible world powered by the Internet. Because now, EVERYONE – yes, that includes YOU – has the power to build a brand around the unique, special and exquisitely exciting person that you are. “Solopreneurs should not fear competition. You are unique. There is only one YOU.” My friend Mari Smith , whom FAST COMPANY magazine calls “the Pied Piper of Facebook” , said it very nicely on one of her blog posts. That’s absolutely true, especially when you sell your audience on you. Suddenly, you have no serious ‘competition’. And that’s why it helps to think about yourself in the same way as you would a product or service. Consider features and benefits. Figure out positioning and USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Think about marketing angles and presentation. Then use the inexpensive, yet wildly powerful tools that you have access to, and leverage your online presence into a strong brand that attracts the right kind of people into your network . “Social marketing” , even if it’s a paradox in terms, is about revealing and sharing your personality. When you align that with your brand and business, you can squeeze incredible value out of your engagement on every social network you choose to participate on. That’s how marketing on social media works. Authenticity is its currency. Transparency is the risk. Trust is your rich reward. The nice thing is that you can direct the conversations that happen around your brand – by becoming a part of it online . Except that it’s a lot more complex than merely promoting a service or launching a new product – because this is something you are selling ALL THE TIME. Yes, even when you’re schmoozing on a discussion forum, or answering personal email, or dashing off a tweet on Twitter, or updating your status on Facebook. Yes, even when you’re posting that funny picture on Flickr, or commenting on recent news updates, or sharing a joke or quote or a blog post with friends. Yes, whatever you do online (and maybe, even offline – since the people you do it with may share it on the ubiquitous Web!) And the collective impact of it all is what goes into creating what Hugh ‘GapingVoid’ Macleod calls ‘ the global microbrand ‘ that’s YOU. That’s the risk – and the opportunity. Because when you do things that are remarkable or worth sharing, you tap into the new ‘recommendation era’ we are now entering, and get your brand to go viral through social networks. People tell people about you. New audiences hear about you and your message. Markets open up and expand. Competition withers away and dies. All of this can happen – for FREE! Amazing, huh?! So what can you do to take advantage of this situation and leverage it into expanding your business and growing your profits? It’s easy. Just make it easy for others to recommend you . Realize that you are selling yourself, the brand named ‘You Inc,’ and use that realization to structure everything that you say and do – at least in the future. You can take this insight that you are selling yourself all the time, and use it to attract the attention of your ideal propects, build relationships with them that translate into getting closer to your goals, and turn them into spokespersons for your brand, for your business, and for YOU. Knowing this, will you go out on Twitter or Facebook spraying around affiliate links willy-nilly? Or will you engage your followers and friends in conversation? Knowing this, will you mindlessly pass along racist jokes, controversial blog posts, or make religiously offensive comments? Or will you first run it through the “Does this fit my brand?” filter? Knowing this, will you condemn and criticize folks, or bad-mouth certain categories of people on a public discussion forum, lose your temper or go off on rants? Or will you tweak this behavior to fit your ‘micro-brand’ better? Maybe yes. Maybe not. But either way, EVERYTHING that you do has an impact and influence. Because, remember, YOU are the brand! Is Your Brand APP-licable?

by Paul Joseph April 12, 2011 Featured

The evolution of brand engagement is mobile! Once a month, I get together with a colleague and friend of mine over “dos” pomegranate margaritas and chips and salsa (“patatas fritas y salsa”). We collaborate on and share the latest new apps we’ve discovered and downloaded on our iPhones. At some point I wonder if there is a “Apps Anonymous” group out there supporting those addicted apps junkies. One of my most recent downloads is “Translate,” a free app that equips me to translate any language to any other language. My husband and I are learning Spanish through a self training DVD course and it is just the thing for me to pull up and use when we are out and about challenging each other on identifying the Spanish term for day-to-day items and phrases, and in particular, dining out at Mexican restaurants and ordering in Spanish. Gotta love it! Then, there are apps specifically designed to enlist, equip, and empower advocates for brands large and small, local and global. And it never ceases to amaze me how creative companies can be in inventing reasons for customers to download their apps and connect with their brand. For example, I decided to think of random industries that, at first glance, you may think – “What the heck would they have in an app for me?” Then, I researched a specific brand in the industry and collected some data on their approach to app offerings to glean the vastness of ideas that enlist, equip, and empower loyalty, well beyond the brick and mortar and well into virtual 24/7. Chick-fil-A: Mobile App/Website Engagement Website: Post your experience story with their stores. “Save a Cow” day – April 18 th – go to any Chick-fil-A store dressed up as a cow and receive a free sandwich! Find restaurants, get maps/driving directions, view menu, join text insiders for promotional offers, restaurant details (i.e. playgrounds, Wi-Fi). Billion Acts of Green: Mobile App/Website Engagement Post a pledge for an inspiring act of green Read other posts by individuals or corporations Share activity on Facebook Watch leader-board grow with acts of green Donate to the Earth Day Network North Face: Mobile App/Website Engagement Find local hiking trails, topography maps, distance, elevations, level of difficulty, and pictures of trail features. Read stories of other hikers’ experiences on a particular trail Upload pictures and stories of your own experiences Participate in outdoor activities sponsored by North Face all over the world, share stories, pictures, etc. Toms Shoes : Mobile App/Website Engagement Mobile App: Learn about the critical aspects of shoes on children in under-developed countries, how and where Tom’s gives, featured events to participate in, news, blogs, tweets, participate in spreading the word and uploading pictures, One Day Radio soundtrack player, and watch video gallery from events around the world. Shop merchandise; “Wear the message.” “Day Without Shoes” event to participate in, share stories, post pictures on One Day photo wall, and check out what others are doing. As far as trivia in the world of apps… According to Wikipedia, as of October 2010, there are at least 300,000 third-party apps officially available on the Apple App Store. As of January 18, 2011, the App Store had over 9.9 billion downloads, which was announced via the company’s “10 Billion App Countdown”. At 10:26 AM GMT on Saturday, January 22, 2011, the 10 billionth app was downloaded from Apple App Store. The median revenue per application is estimated to be $700, although on data no more publicly available. The average price of non-free application is estimated between $3.5 and $4. The distribution of price follows a power law distribution (the Zipf–Mandelbrot law ): “Although prices can be freely chosen, most sellers price their application at multiple of $5 (minus 1 cent).” Apps are so popular, there are now web sites that help companies with limited app-building skill sets, like ours, compose their own, via templates and best practices. The site www.appmakr.com is one site that offers all kinds of features to plug into your uniquely, custom-branded app, like image galleries, video uploads, podcast feeds, RSS feeds, push alerts (coupons, specials, etc.), and so much more. I am currently in the process of building our own app. Stay tuned, and I will tell you how it goes! So, as I continue to think about the uses of apps, I thought about how my entire day could become App-licable. Here goes: 6:30 am – I awake to the ‘Sleep Machine Lite’ app where I set my alarm on my iPhone to awaken me to selected music. 7:00 am – I open my North Face app and choose a local trail to hike, learn about the elevation, distance and see pictures of the trail uploaded from previous hikers. 7:15 am – I plug in my earphones and launch my Pandora app to my customized radio ‘station’ feature and begin my hike. 8:30 am – I launch my horoscopes app to get a feel for what my day might bring. 9:00 am – I open my CNBC app to check out what is going on in the stock market. 10:00 am – Head out to meet up with a friend across town at a Starbucks I have not yet been to, so I launch my Starbucks app and click on the locator feature to zero in on my destination. 10:25 am – While waiting for her to arrive, I launch my Yahoo IM! app to chat with another friend and confirm next week’s lunch date. 11:00 am – Over coffee and a light snack, my friend and I are conversing about a weird symptom she has and it prompts me to launch my ‘Cures A-Z’ app and help her locate some natural remedies for her ailments. 1:30 pm – Setting up for my workshop, I realize an old colleague friend is in my audience. I want to get their contact information, so I launch my ‘Bump’ app and we bump smartphone for an instantaneous delivery of contact information. 3:00 pm – I finish up facilitating a small business branding workshop and am now launching my ‘SQUARE’ app to accept credit cards on my iPhone for the sale of our Brand DNA book to workshop participants. 4:00 pm – I open up my LinkedIn and Facebook apps to check in with colleagues and connections and upload thoughtful content. 6:00 pm – I video Skype my husband to confirm our dinner date rendezvous at a local restaurant and let him know I am on my way. 6:30 pm – ‘Hello Vino’ app is opened to research suggested wine pairings with what I am ordering on the menu – I choose a beautiful Viognier to go with my shrimp scampi! 6:45 pm – We chat about the latest movies that are out and I check my Fandango app for movie trailers and times and set a weekend date to see one. 7:45 pm – I hand over my ‘Quick Tip’ app to my husband to calculate the tip for our wonderful meal – it’s too late to do math! 8:00 pm – As we are driving home, I open the ‘Distant Suns’ app to see what constellations are at our zenith and find out what phase the moon is in – nice discussion on the way home. 8:17 pm – We are pulling up in the driveway and notice our porch light is out, so I launch me ‘Flashlight’ app and shine the way to the key hole! 9:30 pm – Finally, I re-launch my ‘Sleep Machine Lite’ app, select my go-to-sleep music, beach#2 (slow wave action), to play for 30 minutes as I rest my head on my pillow and review my very APP-licable day. The way we live as consumers and operate and build our businesses is changing. You too can get on the APP wagon move with mobile evolution and build your own. Take some time to brainstorm what your app could possibly be used for. Get creative : Research other apps’ features and functions to get more ideas. Don’t forget to ensure that every element of your app, from visual to functionality, is congruent with your Brand DNA! Now, go make your business brand more App-licable! TiE Chennai’s Mentoring Program for Young Entrepreneurs -“TiE MENTORS”

by Paul Joseph October 12, 2010 Featured

Chennai, October 12, 2010: TiE Chennai today formally launched TiE MENTOR – a mentorship program that is focused on guiding and fostering entrepreneurial spirit among young and next generation entrepreneurs. The program is structured based on recommendations from a comprehensive research conducted amongst various stakeholders in the city. A unique facet of the program is its one-to-one mentoring approach – which pairs an experienced and successful entrepreneur with a new one – combined with a global platform which makes available the experience of a galaxy of successful entrepreneurs from the global TiE community to the Mentee entrepreneur. Commenting on the program, R Ramaraj, President, TiE Chennai said, “Mentoring has been an integral part of our ancient educational system. However, the concept of mentoring and offering guidance to build confident and successful entrepreneurs has been tried out systematically only in the past few decades. Today Mentoring is viewed as the most powerful support for entrepreneurs who dream to create the enterprise of tomorrow. This is one of the strong pillars of TiE. The program is quite structured with focused workshops for mentors and mentees. We have currently about 27 TiE Chennai members as Mentors and Mentees. We expect this to grow further in this year as we increase our emphasis and focus on this important aspect of nurturing entrepreneurship.” According to Chandu Nair, a Charter Member and Leader of the TiE Mentor programme, “The initial response has been highly encouraging with SmartlearnWebTV and Schoolmate emerging as two success stories through the program. As the economy picks up further and opportunities abound, we expect this program to benefit more young entrepreneurs.” Under the program, the Mentees get periodic (typically once a month) face to face interactions of about two hours with the paired mentor to discuss various aspects of the business and how to grow it. Apart from this, mentees also have the option to contact the mentors on an ad-hoc basis to bounce off specific concerns or issues. The Mentor, on the other hand, helps the Mentee by providing access to his network and contacts, besides offering guidance. TiE’s Global/ Remote Mentoring platform also provides opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to access, regardless of their location, a global pool of experts and successful businessmen from within the TiE fraternity. About TiE Chennai: TiE Chennai is the Chennai chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a global not-for-profit organization that helps budding entrepreneurs by way of advice, guidance and assistance from successful and experienced entrepreneurs and professionals.
