We Care India: An Online Portal for Social Investors that Encourages Lending as little as Rs 100

by Paul Joseph February 2, 2012 Featured

It doesn’t take much to support a needy entrepreneur in a country, where majority of the poor do not have access to institutional credit. All it takes is the willingness and the right platform that can facilitate such communication between an aspiring entrepreneur and a social investor.  And that’s what We Care India is all about. YourStory caught up with Mr. Sanju Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Samrudhi Micro Finance, who is determined to change India’s perspective on microfinance and extend a much needed helping hand to those who truly deserve it. Set up only last year, We Care India is a project of Samrudhi, which has been developed around the widely feted model of Grameen Bank. It’s a peer-to-peer online platform that enables individuals to become social investors by lending small sums of money to borrowers listed on their website www.wecareindia.org . Borrowers are usually small rural entrepreneurs such as tailors, shop owners, cattle breeders, who are shortlisted after careful screening by their field partners. “The name, We Care India is self explanatory; anyone who cares for the underprivileged in India can join the site and invest by providing funds as low as Rs 100,” explains Kumar. Through We Care India, borrowers pay an interest rate of 8 percent per annum, out of which 1 percent is utilised to cover the websites’ maintenance costs, while the investor earns a return of 3.5 percent per annum and the rest is utilized for operational purpose. “We follow a peer-pressure model. It is mandatory for borrowers to join a group and if one member fails to repay, remaining members from that group have to pay the loan on his or her behalf.  Also, no one from that group remains eligible to receive another loan”. Each member undergoes a compulsory training for five days where it is ensured that every borrower understands about the services such as rate of interest and repayment terms.   After training, individual profiles are verified carefully using housing surveys, assessing poverty level, their credit history and credit need, and only then one is eligible for a loan. We Care India conducts a loan utilisation check within 15 days from the date of disbursement to ensure that the borrowed loan is used for the said purposes. “The organization targets mostly rural & urban poor women, who are not only the most marginalized section of our society, but they also tend to use resources more productively than men do”, says Kumar, who has over ten years of experience in the field of agriculture, microfinance and socio-economic development.  He is a graduate in Agricultural Science and a GSBI fellow from Santa Clara University, USA. About 80 percent of the project was funded by We Care India’s mother organization Samrudhi and the rest came from their US based partner Asha. Kumar explains that of- late credit support from mainstream banks to MFIs (microfinance institutions) has almost come to a standstill. “Banks are not willing to fund MFIs as almost all of the banks are following a wait-and-watch strategy ever since the Andhra Pradesh crisis.” It was this stagnancy that encouraged Kumar to start an online p2p lending platform.  International organizations like Kiva, Microfunds and Vitaana have already succeeded in sourcing money globally through online lending and Kumar believes there is no reason why such models cannot be replicated and implemented in India. Getting approval for the payment gateway was the biggest challenge Kumar had to face while setting up We Care India.  “In India, there isn’t a single payment gateway willing to go easy on non profit organization such as ours.  We thus, had to partner with an US based organisation so that we could use PayPal to accept payments,” he says. Kumar and his five member team are working to introduce similar loans in education and healthcare. “We want to give social investors a wider range of choice to invest in and we want to ensure that each product is tailored as per the need of the beneficiaries,” he adds. Samrudhi is currently operational in Northern Karnataka that works in collaboration with organizations such as Asha USA, Indians for Collective Action USA, KBS LAB, Ananya and IDF Financial services. Within a month, almost 3000 people have visited the website and 200 have registered. They are actively looking at hiring in various levels and by 2014 Kumar expects to consolidate Samrudhi’s operation in all 23 districts of Karnataka. Kumar believes that the poor are bankable and have a keen credit discipline. They undertake small and manageable enterprises and have the potential to improve productivity and make sustainable profits to alleviate India out of poverty. Author: Krishnakali Sengupta

Amazon launches Junglee in India : Doesn’t sell products directly

by Paul Joseph February 2, 2012 Featured

So the wait is over. The name synonymous with e-commerce  globally Amazon, has an India specific offering in the form of Junglee. But unlike the global site Amazon.com, Junglee is not selling products directly but lists products from online and offline retailers in India and from Amazon.com. Some of the retailers using the marketplace are Homeshop18, UniverCell, Hidesign, Gitanjali, The Bombay Store, Fabindia, Bata India Limited, Dabur Uveda, Microsoft India Store, Reebok, and Amazon.com. The website says that they have over 1.2 crore products and 14,000 brands. The selection includes more than 90 lakh books and 30 lakh products. Junglee features more than 25 categories including mobile phones, cameras, toys & games, baby products, books, music, movies & TV, clothing, jewellery, kitchen & home products. “You cannot buy directly from Junglee. Junglee puts you in touch with sellers by directing you to their websites, displaying their customer service phone numbers and providing their physical store locations to help you buy the products directly from sellers” reads their FAQ section. Some of India’s biggest e-tailers are conspicuous by their absence. Will they see this as a marketplace or as competition is something we have wait and watch.

Startup Clk2C.com Makes Mobile Video Advertising Personalized and Innovative

by Paul Joseph February 1, 2012 Featured

Mobile is slowly but surely becoming the “go to” medium for most marketing and branding activities. Advancement in mobile technology has made it possible for users to access multimedia content and browse the internet even on a sub-Rs. 5000 phone. According to the latest report from Analysys Mason the number of mobile connections in India is expected to increase from 812 million (end 2011) to 1.36 billion (in 2020). We carry our mobile phone (or mobile devices) wherever we go. So, for a brand it is the most accessible medium to communicate with their target market. Ghaziabad based startup, Clk2C.com , is making the most of this opportunity. For a startup like Clk2C.com this opens up great opportunities. Clk2C.com is a mobile video advertising platform. “The main USP of a medium like Clk2C.com is the fact that it is a ‘Me & You’ kind of medium”, says Suresh Kabra, Founder, Samadhan Systems, which is the parent company. Unlike television or outdoor advertising mediums, a mobile video advertising medium is more personal and interactive. It allows brands to engage with their target customers in a more personalized manner. Samadhan Systems, which was founded in 2007, first entered the mobile video content sector in 2009 through mobile video greetings. The response to it was very encouraging and that led to the birth of Clk2C.com in April 2010. Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics was one of the first brands to like this innovative medium and approached Clk2C.com to create a viral mobile commercial. In the past year and a half they have worked with some of the biggest brands (across industry) in the Indian market, including Mercedes-Benz , Domino’s Pizza , Punjab National Bank , etc. One of the major projects Clk2C.com is working on currently is BJP’s mobile video campaign for the UP elections. They have also done major mobile video campaigns for HDFC (a pan-India lead generation campaign) and GNIIT (campaign to promote their cloud program). Clk2C.com is quite a flexible medium. It is not necessary to deliver only video content; it could also be a presentation or something else. “As any other new media format or medium we faced certain challenges pertaining to acceptance”, says Suresh. According to him it was particularly acute for Clk2C.com as brand managers and marketing professionals took some time to get accustomed to the possibilities of a mobile video advertising campaign. Samadhan Systems was completely bootstrapped. They are currently in discussion with a few VC’s and hope to complete a deal within 2012. The customer base for Clk2C.com is steadily increasing and a number of innovative campaigns are in the pipeline. Their video greeting site ifeelclub.com has also been recording 100% month-on-month increase in downloads. The beginning of 2012 has seen a 400% increase in revenue over the same period last year. Speaking about Clk2C.com’s plan for the next 12 months Suresh said, “We plan to work closely with major advertising agencies and integrate mobile video advertising with the brands entire campaign.” Exploring new verticals in terms of industry is another goal. They also want to aggressively market their mobile video invitation services, which has already attracted some traction. “This year we want to increase the number of active customers to one lakh per month”, adds Suresh. Last year for Valentine’s Day MAAC had sponsored the greetings and it was downloaded across 73 cities in India. Similar plans are in place for this year and they are in talks with some companies for possible sponsorship. “Mobile video advertising and mobile greetings are at one level connected to each other. So, a Haldiram’s can utilize mobile video greetings to send out Diwali greetings to its customers and use mobile video advertising to engage with them”, Suresh points out.

Preparing a Rent Agreement for your Business? Read this first!

by Paul Joseph January 31, 2012 Featured

Lawyers at VakilSearch guide you As an entrepreneur, you often have to enter into a Rental Agreement. Very few entrepreneurs have the luxury of buying property, and therefore it is vital that your rental agreement is comprehensive and protects you completely. At the outset, it can be stated that most problems arising out of a tenancy / rental agreement occur due to the tenant failing to comprehend the implications and meaning of certain terms or clauses in the agreement. While most people use the words “Tenant”, “Landlord” & “Property”, being lawyers, we may be referring to them as “Lessee”, “Lessor” & “Scheduled Property” respectively). We have compiled a list of clauses which you as an entrepreneur should watch out for while preparing your Rental Agreement. By following these clauses, you can avoid making common mistakes many people (and not just entrepreneurs) make. Responsibilities of both the parties : There are various acts that the parties agree to perform. Every agreement has to guarantee that the tenant will have free and unrestricted access to the property. If it is for a commercial purpose, also make sure that you can put up sign boards or name boards outside the property. Every tenant should also demand a guarantee that he / she will have access to water, electricity and sewerage (although you may have to pay for it). Typically, every city has a sewerage board (like the BWSSB in Bengaluru), so insert a clause which says that the landlord should make sure the property has the necessary facilities provided by the appropriate boards. Likewise, the landlord will demand that the tenant maintains the property in good condition, and that it should be returned in the same condition that it was received in. If you are the tenant, make sure that the agreement is subject to normal wear and tear and something called “force majeure”. “Force Majeure” basically means that if there is a flood, earthquake, natural calamity or any other such eventuality, and the property is damaged, you as the tenant will not be held liable. Many agreements do not contain this clause, so this is a very common mistake: watch out for it. It is a healthy practice to allow the landlord to inspect the property at a mutually agreeable time; The landlord will expect the tenant to be responsible for prompt payment of utility bills (water, electricity, etc) and rent payment as per the agreement, so if you want the landlord to pay those bills, make sure you specify that as well. Which Court will be responsible for hearing disputes? This may not seem like a very important clause, but do not underestimate its importance. If you are originally from Hyderabad and living temporarily in Bangalore, you can insist that jurisdiction will be with Courts in Hyderabad. Very often, people do not expect anything to go wrong, so the other side may agree. If something does indeed go wrong, it will save you the trouble of travelling to Bangalore each time. Choose the place of jurisdiction intelligently. If you expect to be in Bangalore for a long time, then make it Bangalore only, and not Hyderabad. Description of the property : This is key. Every property must be clearly defined and details like the Door no, Floor, Street no, Road name, Area and Pin Code along with boundaries and in the case of an independent house, information regarding the surrounding properties must be mentioned. Typically, the property schedule looks something like this: “An Apartment, situated at Plot No 13, G2, ABC Apartments, DEF Housing Society, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore – 560024 We will be writing on other clauses in the next part, which will follow shortly. We will be focusing there on tax payment, your security deposit and repairs. So keep reading! 51% Facebook users are concerned about Facebook Timeline; reveals Sophos’ Survey

by Paul Joseph January 31, 2012 Featured

We are all familiar with Facebook ‘Timeline’. A number of users have already adopted the new look, but there are others who are either confused or indifferent. Now Sophos, an IT security and data protection company, has revealed that more than 50% of the existing Facebook users are concerned about the Facebook profile update. Sophos has a presence in 150 countries and over 100 million users depend on them for complex threats and data loss. Over the next few weeks Facebook will phase out the old look and make the ‘Timeline’ format mandatory. ‘Timeline’ will present a scrapbook of all your past activities on Facebook. This format encourages users to share more personal details about themselves and their life experiences. It will make it much simpler to view any particular user’s information and will also make identifying fake profiles and stalkers easy. All Facebook apps will be integrated with the Timeline and updates from those will also be published. So the last song you listened to on Spotify or the last article you read on Washington Post will be published on your Timeline and you do not have to ‘Share’ or press ‘Like’. The survey Sophos conducted had 4100 respondents from around the world. This online poll asked them what their opinion about the Facebook Timeline is. And what came out of the survey? An incredible 51% of the respondents are worried about their Facebook Timeline. A miniscule 8 % liked their profile’s new look and another 8% think that with time they will get used to it. The most interesting fact to come out of the poll is that 32% of the respondents still do not know why they are on Facebook, in the first place. Sophos’ Senior Technology Consultant, Graham Cluley, thinks, “The Facebook Timeline will be a wake-up call to some that they have shared too much in the past, too freely. In my case, the Timeline was the catalyst to reassess my relationship with Facebook – and so I’ve killed my account.” He further believes that the Facebook Timeline will give people a chance to stop for a minute and reassess what they share online. A number of users have cleaned their public profile and online friend relationships. The amount of information available on Timeline is like a goldmine for scammers. Facebook Timeline will change the way the over 800 million users behave on Facebook, henceforth. Facebook needs to take measures to make users feel more comfortable with Timeline.
